Was completely entranced by the first half of this book. I really enjoyed the world and the concept of the story. I stayed up until 3 in the morning Still glad I read it for that first half, though. There was so much I liked about this book, and so much that irked me. I loved, loved the premise of magicians in college becoming disillusioned and never really finding their way. I liked Lev Grossman's narrative style, which flirted with classic British fantasy conventions, but which snapped into dry, sardonic humor almost without warning.
I disliked the clunky dropping-in of important plot points that seemed to be in opposition to the premise Basically there were certain elements that swooped in and gave the protagonist something to live for a little while longer, but in between he kept drooping into a malaise that seemed much more real, and I was sorry that the story had to move forward that way.
Anyway, I'm glad I read it, but won't be in a hurry to read the sequels. I liked the Narnia meets Harry Potter concept. But somehow, the second half just didn't quite thrill me as I expected. Maybe there was just too much overlapping with the other two in a way that left this neither here nor there.
I had just finished some pretty emotional reading and was seeking something light. I can see where the list maker was coming from- a magic school this one more of a college , an outsider who never knew magic was real until invited to the school, etc etc.
Not a fan. Very creative, but too long IMO. I listened to this and the narrator was wonderful. I'm not sure if The Magician King is the next book in this series.
I stopped reading halfway through. I found the story choppy with missing pieces. Threads were left hanging, especially at the end of a chapter, and never picked up again. Important events, like the death of a student during an experiment, were glossed over. Any book. While I knew going into the story that it was a love letter to J. Rowling and T. White, it was more of a direct copy then an influence. Just make Harry a few years older, an American, with Ron and Hermione already by his side and poof!
You've got The Magicians. I couldn't get beyond the fact that I felt like I was reading fan fiction instead of a new piece of work, and a poorly plotted novel at that.
I will not argue that all works stem from influence of others, that's how the arts survive, but this felt less like an homage and more of lazy writing then something creatively new. I started this with high hopes but it jumped ship about halfway through and I decided to just stick with the TV show.
Quentin is an insufferable, thoughtless, and selfish main character. He had so many chances to redeem himself, but was unable to get his head out of his own ass that he couldn't even become the next super-villain which is where I though he was going after with the Questing Beast.
He though most of the other characters were horrible as well ruined what could otherwise have been a passable book with an interesting take on what happens when "children" find a magical world and the realities that actually take place rather then the slightly sugar-coated world of Narnia and Hogwarts.
