The levels also contain a variety of secret areas behind camouflaged doors, some of which may be locked and require a puzzle to be solved in order to unlock them.
Overload also features an upgrade system. Upgrade points are scattered around the levels, mostly behind secret areas, and are also given for completing certain tasks, such as finding all of the survivor cryostasis tubes. The player can upgrade the gunship with these points between levels, with upgrades available for both the weapons and the ship itself. If the player racks up too much damage and depletes the gunship's armor, the ship is destroyed.
The player is then required to load from an earlier save single-player campaign only or to restart the level. There are two single-player modes in the game. The first is the Cronus Frontier campaign featuring 16 levels and three bosses, while the second is Challenge Mode, a survival mode taking place in twelve different levels. The Challenge Mode features two modes of its own, Infinite and Countdown, and its levels are smaller than those of the campaign.
The campaign story features full voice acting in English, with subtitles available in the other languages supported by the game. Keyboard and mouse implementation is actually quite good at the moment, but a gamepad will no doubt be ideal. Of course, the minions are Overlord's biggest draw. You slowly gain the ability to control more and more of the things, moving on from simple brown minions to specialised ones. Red minions are impervious to fire and can launch fireballs, green minions are stealthy assassins and blue minions can heal and revive their dead friends.
Run them through some furniture and crates with a sweep of the mouse and they smash and destroy everything in their path. They'll pick up useful debris like pots to use as helmets, or wood to use as weapons, or if they find gold or healing potions, they'll run back to offer it to you with a raspy-voiced and startlingly enough, not annoyingly repetitive : "For yoooouu!
Order them to attack enemy and they'll swarm all over them, jumping on their victim's Ixick and overpowering them with numbers. Revival Productions is continuing where Parallax left off and creating an all-new game that combines the best of classic flying shooter gameplay with modern graphics and technology.
Destroy robots, rescue hostages, blow up the reactor, and escape before the whole thing explodes. More than a dozen sinister robot types and 3 massive bosses.
